avoiding ignorance; staying informed

What is happening in Japan is a tragedy.

The other day I saw a picture of a mother saying her goodbyes to her daughter who was lying there lifeless, trapped in a crushed car. It absolutely shatters my heart that there may be more people who were washed out to sea than the bodies that were actually found. It brings me to tears that Japan can possibly become the next Chernobyl.

But before we go on to our facebook, twitter, tumble or wordpress accounts and talk about how we should pray for Japan, let’s try to be informed about this situation so that we can specifically and thoughtfully pray for Japan. Let’s not ever respond by saying “I don’t know” or guess facts and figures that pertain to real-life tragedies.

If the amounts of articles seem overwhelming at this point, I don’t blame you… American media tends to oversaturate the news based on trending obsessions but visit this and this to at least get a simple yet foundational understanding of what happened and what is going on. My mom kept worrying about all sorts of things and then she started to get borderline crazy with ‘the end is near rhetoric” and “Jesus must be coming” speeches so I sat her down and explained what was going on with these two interactive features and then she responded, “it’s time to pray”

Brothers and sisters, worrying is a natural reaction to current events because as our awareness of world events broaden, the more we realize that we have absolutely no control over anything. Let us be informed and prayerful Christians who do not buy into the media’s coverage of whatever is trending and become obsessed with unnecessary stories.

Let’s take advantage of this power and ability to amass information, stories, and testimonies from all over the world and be moved by God’s power at work, God’s glory being shown, and His people’s need for prayer.

for me,…

it’s time to pray
